QUB Scrubs Surgical Skills Conference - 22nd March 2026

QUB Scrubs, the surgical society, will be hosting the annual Surgical Skills Conference on Sunday 22nd March from 09:00-17:00 in the MBC and we would be delighted to have you join us!

This will provide an opportunity for all medical students to attend two talks and two workshops related to surgery.
Talks will include: an address from the Head of the Northern Ireland Board of the Royal College of Surgeons of England and from NIMDTA.
Each student will be allocated to two workshops (one for the morning and one for the afternoon) based on preferences:

- Cardiothoracic Surgery: aortic valve replacement with porcine hearts, chest drain insertion, a demonstration of video-assisted thoracoscopic surgery (VATS) for lung resection and virtual reality headsets with VRiMS
- Neurosurgery: burr holes and craniotomies, dural suturing using microsurgical equipment, tumour resection simulation and extra-ventricular drains and intracranial pressure monitoring
- Plastics: cleft palate repair, facial laceration repair, microsurgery using loupes and rhomboid flaps and Z-plasties
- Vascular: vascular anastomosis using microsurgical equipment, abdominal aortic repair, varicose vein ablation demonstration and a careers talk on vascular surgery.
