Autumn/Winter Evening Medical Updates Live at 18:30 (UK time)    

Registration is now open for our autumn/winter Evening Medical Updates (EMUs).  You can block-book to view our September 2026 - January 2027 Evening Medical Updates online from home. Free for RCPE members. Student membership is also free.

Block-booking is open until 27 September 2026.  Our popular EMU programme covers specialities, presentations and conditions included within the Internal Medicine Training (IMT) curriculum. Within these, we aim to cover topics from a range of clinical settings including the acute medical take, outpatients department, community care and critical care. Although aimed primarily at resident doctors, Evening Medical Updates are open to all hospital doctors, GPs, other healthcare professionals, and medical students. Book now for the following events: 

Fits and Funny Turns 
Tuesday 29 September 

• Understand how to recognise, classify and initiate appropriate first line management for common seizure presentations.
• Recognise common patterns of involuntary movement and understand the broad clinical approaches to assessing their underlying causes.
• Improve confidence in diagnosing functional neurological disorders and explaining them clearly to patients.

Tuesday 20 October

• Recognise common adverse drug reactions and key toxidromes, and understand the principles of assessing and managing these presentations.
• Develop a structured approach to reviewing long term medicines and safely reducing or stopping treatments that no longer offer benefit.
• Understand how core pharmacological principles guide treatment decisions across common cardiovascular conditions.

• Gain an understanding of how acute-level care can be safely delivered in the home setting and the key factors that support effective patient selection and management.
• Develop an understanding of the causes and assessment of age-related muscle loss to support early recognition and management.
• Understand how integrating frailty expertise across clinical teams supports early identification, holistic assessment and coordinated care for older adults.

Joint Pain and Swelling
Tuesday 15 December 

• Develop an understanding of how to recognise common inflammatory arthritis presentations and outline the key principles guiding their investigation and management.
• Identify key clinical features that raise concern for an infected joint and outline a simple initial approach to assessment and decision-making
• Develop an understanding of how to recognise, investigate and manage common crystal-induced joint diseases, including their typical presentations and underlying mechanisms.

Confusion
Tuesday 26 January 2027  

• Recognise the key features of delirium, differentiate it from other cognitive disorders, and apply evidence-based strategies to assess, prevent, and manage delirium in clinical practice.
• Identify key infectious and autoimmune causes of encephalitis and outline appropriate diagnostic pathways.
• Differentiate acute psychosis from other causes of behavioural disturbance and determine when compulsory measures are clinically and legally justified.
