Involving Patients
Patient advocacy
Diabetes treated with insulin was described long ago as a disease where a patient has to be their own doctor. Many people with diabetes have valuable expertise about diabetes in general and, in particular, about their diabetes. The AW-diabetes programme (formerly MITS) trains people with diabetes to facilitate case discussions (as ‘patient advocates’), like health professionals, and share their expertise with (student) clinicians. All facilitators - whether patient advocates or professionals - place heavy emphasis on clinicians involving patients at the point of care.
